According to USA Facts, billions of U.S. dollars are used for congressional and presidential elections, with most coming from political action
committees (PAC's). The U.S Presidential Public Funding Program also helps finance campaigns for qualifying candidates. After elections, unused
funds can be transferred to future campaigns, refunded to donors, donated to charity, or used for recounts. However, personal use of campaign funds is prohibited.
In the 2023-24 elections, republican candidates recieved the most funds for their political campaigns compared to other parties.
The Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA) sets strict rules on how candidates can use campaign funds to maintain transparency and prevent
misuse. Campaign funds can be used for legitimate expenses such as advertising. Funds are also allowed for day-to-day operational costs, including salaries and other administrative needs.
Travel expenses are permissible when they directly relate to campaign activities. However, the law prohibits using
campaign funds for personal expenses, such as paying for a candidate's personal living costs or luxury items. These restrictions ensure that funds are used to
support the electoral process and maintain public trust in the fairness of elections.
Most funds are contributed from PAC's and individual donors. In the map below, view how much your state contributed to political campaigns
during the 2023-24 election cycle.
